Travel insurance and dental treatment overseas

Why UK travel insurance may exclude elective dental treatment abroad, and how dental patients should check cover before travelling to Vietnam.

UK travel insurance is essential for Vietnam, but many policies exclude planned dental treatment or complications arising from elective procedures. Patients should read the policy wording, call the insurer, keep a reference number and understand that Picasso's warranty is not a substitute for travel medical insurance.

The insurance gap

Many patients buy travel insurance for lost luggage, cancellation and medical emergencies, then assume it also covers the dental work they are travelling to receive. That assumption is risky.

Planned veneers, implants, All-on-4, crowns and cosmetic dentistry are often excluded. Complications connected to elective treatment may also be excluded or restricted.

Before you travel

  1. Read the policy wording, not just the comparison-table summary.
  2. Search the policy for dental, cosmetic, elective treatment, medical tourism and planned procedure exclusions.
  3. Call the insurer and explain the trip plainly.
  4. Ask for written confirmation or a call reference number.
  5. Keep an emergency fund separate from the treatment budget.

What Picasso warranty covers

SmileCare warranty terms relate to eligible dental materials, workmanship review and remedial pathways. They do not replace emergency medical insurance, missed-flight cover, lost luggage cover, medical evacuation cover or repatriation cover.
